PS Remote Play streams a game from your own PS5 or PS4 to another screen. PlayStation cloud streaming runs an eligible game from Sony’s servers instead, so your PS5 does not have to be on—or even available.

That is the central difference. Remote Play is the better choice when you want access to the games installed on your console and do not want to pay for PlayStation Plus Premium. Cloud streaming is more convenient when you want to start an eligible game without a download, avoid using console storage, or use PlayStation Portal while your PS5 is off or occupied.

What is PS Remote Play?

Remote Play turns your PlayStation console into the host. The PS5 or PS4 runs the game, renders the image, and sends video and audio across the network to the Remote Play device. Your controller inputs travel back to the console.

Because your console is doing the actual work, Remote Play can access compatible games installed on that console. This includes many games you own outright as well as installed subscription games that remain licensed to your account.

The console must be on or in Rest Mode with the correct network and power-saving settings enabled. If it is completely powered off, disconnected from the internet, installing a system update, or unable to wake from Rest Mode, Remote Play cannot reach it.

Sony’s official Remote Play page supports streaming to PlayStation Portal, Windows and Mac computers, phones and tablets, and other PlayStation consoles.

Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus Premium

The Remote Play feature itself does not require the Premium subscription. You need a PlayStation account, a compatible source console and destination device, and a suitable network connection.

Normal game rules still apply. If a game requires PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, Remote Play does not remove that requirement. If a subscription game’s license has expired or the title has left a catalog, Remote Play cannot make it playable.

What happens on the TV while using Remote Play?

Remote Play uses the active session on your console. The same PS5 cannot independently run one game for the TV user and a different Remote Play game for someone else. If another person signs in and takes over the console, your Remote Play session may be interrupted.

This is why Remote Play is excellent when the television is occupied but the PS5 itself is free. It is not a way to turn one PS5 into two separate gaming systems.

What is PlayStation cloud streaming?

Cloud streaming runs an eligible game on remote PlayStation infrastructure and sends the video stream to your device. Nothing needs to be downloaded to your PS5 storage, and your home console is not doing the rendering.

On PS5 and PlayStation Portal, cloud streaming requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and availability in a supported country or region. The selection includes supported titles from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital PS5 games from your own library.

“Select” matters. Owning a digital game does not automatically make it cloud-streamable. Sony maintains a Cloud Streaming Game Finder for eligible titles.

Your PS5 can be off

Because Sony’s servers run the game, a supported cloud-streaming session on PlayStation Portal can start while your PS5 is turned off or being used by another account. That is cloud streaming’s clearest practical advantage over Remote Play.

It also means a PlayStation Portal can use cloud streaming without being paired to your own PS5 for that session. You still need the Portal, a supported account and region, Premium membership, an eligible game, and a suitable connection.

Cloud streaming is not available to child accounts on PS Portal

Sony states that cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal is unavailable for child accounts. Those accounts may still see only the Remote Play interface, depending on the device, account configuration, and region.

Which games can you play with each method?

Remote Play library

Remote Play generally follows what the source console can play. That makes it the broader option for a personal installed library, including eligible digital games and disc games when the correct disc remains inserted in the console.

There are exceptions. Sony says Remote Play cannot be used with games that do not support it, media apps, or the disc player. It is also unavailable while the console is broadcasting or streaming.

Cloud-streaming library

Cloud streaming is limited to games Sony has enabled for the service. Premium includes streamable selections from its catalogs, while some supported digital PS5 purchases can also be streamed from the player’s library.

A physical disc is not a cloud entitlement. Inserting a disc in your home PS5 does not make that game available from Sony’s servers. If the same game is separately included in Premium or otherwise cloud-enabled for your account, that is a different entitlement path.

Do saves carry between Remote Play and cloud streaming?

Remote Play is controlling your own console session, so the game uses the save data available to that console and user profile. You are not moving the save simply by changing screens.

Cloud streaming can continue from a compatible cloud save associated with the same PlayStation account. Sony says Portal users can keep playing from where they left off on console when signed in with the same account, but save compatibility still depends on the game, version, region, and whether the relevant save has synchronized.

Before switching a long-running game between installed play and cloud streaming, close the game cleanly and allow its save to synchronize. Avoid launching two versions at once. PS5 and PS4 editions can also use separate save formats even when they share a title.

Internet requirements and why speed is not the whole story

Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum for Remote Play, with 15 Mbps or faster recommended for better performance. For cloud streaming, Sony says at least 5 Mbps is needed to establish a session, while 1080p streaming requires a connection of at least 15 Mbps.

Raw download speed is only one factor. Both methods are sensitive to:

  • Latency between the controller, host and display
  • Wi-Fi interference and signal strength
  • Packet loss and network congestion
  • Other household uploads and downloads
  • Distance from the router
  • The source console’s upload connection for Remote Play

Remote Play has an extra home-network dependency because your console must send the stream. A fast connection at the destination cannot compensate for weak Wi-Fi or limited upload performance at the PS5.

Cloud streaming removes the home-console link but adds the route to Sony’s servers. Either method can feel better depending on network conditions and location; there is no honest universal claim that one always has less input delay.

Remote Play vs cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal

PlayStation Portal now gives eligible users two distinct home-screen paths:

  • Remote Play: Connect to your own PS5 and control its session.
  • Cloud Streaming: Start a supported game from the cloud with Premium.

Choose Remote Play when the game is installed on your PS5, your console is available, or the title is not cloud-enabled. Choose cloud streaming when your PS5 is off, someone else is using it, you do not want to install the game, or you want to browse supported Premium titles directly from Portal.

The Portal does not install PS5 games locally. Both paths are streamed video experiences; the difference is whether the host is your own console or Sony’s cloud.

Remote Play vs cloud streaming on PC

On a computer, PS Remote Play lets you control your own PS5 or PS4 through the Remote Play app. That is useful for accessing your installed console library from a Windows PC or Mac.

PlayStation Plus on PC is a separate streaming experience for eligible Premium games. Sony requires the PlayStation Plus PC app, a Premium plan, and a compatible controller. It does not turn every game in your PlayStation library into a PC game.

If you want your specific installed PS5 game, Remote Play is normally the relevant tool. If you want to browse the supported Premium streaming catalog without running your console, use PlayStation Plus cloud streaming where available.

Important cloud-streaming limitations

Sony lists several console features that do not work while streaming PlayStation Plus games:

  • Broadcasting
  • Share Play and Share Screen
  • Remote Play from the streaming session
  • PlayStation VR
  • PlayStation Move
  • HD Camera and PlayStation Camera
  • Mouse and keyboard input
  • Third-party controllers in supported console-streaming contexts

Queues may also occur during cloud streaming. Remote Play has different limitations, but it does not depend on cloud-server capacity because your own console is the host.

Which option should you use?

  • Use Remote Play for a game already installed on your console.
  • Use Remote Play if you do not subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium.
  • Use Remote Play when the game is absent from the cloud-streaming list.
  • Use cloud streaming when your PS5 is off or being used by someone else.
  • Use cloud streaming to try a supported game without downloading it.
  • Use cloud streaming when limited PS5 storage is the main problem.
  • Use whichever performs better if both methods support the same game; network routing can make the practical winner different from home to home.

Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium?

You need Premium for PlayStation cloud streaming. You do not need Premium merely to use Remote Play.

If cloud streaming is the only Premium feature you want, verify that your country, device, account and preferred games are supported before upgrading. Our PlayStation Plus Essential vs Extra vs Premium comparison explains the other differences among the plans.

Common questions

Can Remote Play wake a PS5 from Rest Mode?

Yes, if Remote Play is enabled and the PS5’s Rest Mode settings allow it to stay connected to the internet and be turned on from the network.

Can cloud streaming wake a PS5?

It does not need to. A supported cloud game runs on Sony’s servers rather than your home console.

Can two people use the same PS5 while one uses Remote Play?

Not as two independent game sessions. Remote Play controls the console’s active session.

Can someone use the PS5 while I cloud-stream on Portal?

Yes. Sony specifically supports Portal cloud streaming while the associated PS5 is off or being used by another account, provided all cloud requirements are met.

Does cloud streaming include every game I own?

No. Only eligible games are streamable. Check Sony’s current finder for the exact title.

Can Remote Play stream a disc game?

It can access a compatible disc game running on your console when the correct disc is inserted. The console still performs the license check and runs the game.

The verdict

Remote Play is an extension of your own console. Cloud streaming is access to an eligible game running elsewhere. Remote Play gives you the better path to your installed library and does not require Premium, but your console must be available. Cloud streaming removes the console and download requirements, but it needs Premium and supports only selected games, devices, accounts, and regions.

For most Portal owners, the two features are complements rather than rivals: Remote Play for the personal PS5 library, cloud streaming for convenience when the console is unavailable.

If several people share your console, read our PS5 Console Sharing guide to understand how local licenses and Plus benefits differ from both streaming methods.
