News guide · Updated October 9, 2026
Xbox Free Play Days runs through Sunday, October 11, with seven games in the promotion—but they do not all have the same access rules. ARC Raiders is available to try for all Xbox members without a Game Pass membership. Screamer and Family Man require Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential. High On Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Little Nightmares III, and Rogue Waters are separate timed trials available to all Xbox players.
That distinction matters. “Free Play Days” sounds like one big all-you-can-play weekend, but this lineup is split into three different offers.
Xbox Free Play Days lineup for October 8–11
| Game | Access type | Game Pass required? |
|---|---|---|
| ARC Raiders | Free weekend through October 11 | No |
| Screamer | Free weekend through October 11 | Ultimate, Premium, or Essential |
| Family Man | Free weekend through October 11 | Ultimate, Premium, or Essential |
| High On Life 2 | Timed trial | No membership listed as required |
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl | Timed trial | No membership listed as required |
| Little Nightmares III | Timed trial | No membership listed as required |
| Rogue Waters | Two-hour timed trial | No membership listed as required |
The dates and eligibility come from the official October 8 Xbox Wire announcement. Xbox specifically identifies Rogue Waters as a two-hour trial. It does not provide one universal time limit for the other three trials in that announcement, so check each store listing before planning a long session.
ARC Raiders is the easiest offer to try
ARC Raiders is the headline because Xbox says all Xbox members can play it from October 8 through October 11 without Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential.
The free weekend arrives alongside Frozen Trail, which Xbox describes as the game’s largest update since launch. For a new player, the practical attraction is simple: you can find out whether the scavenging, surface runs, and extraction pressure work for you before deciding whether to buy.
Do not confuse a free weekend with permanent ownership. Access ends with the event unless you purchase the game or obtain it through another valid entitlement. Xbox lists a sale on the base game and Deluxe products through October 15, but prices and availability can vary by region.
Screamer and Family Man require Game Pass
The two conventional Free Play Days titles require an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential membership.
Screamer
Screamer mixes arcade racing with fighting mechanics and an anime presentation. It is the pick for players who want immediate action and can use a weekend to decide whether its collision-heavy racing has enough depth to keep them around.
If that description sounds familiar, New Game Wire’s Star Wars: Galactic Racer analysis explores another recent arcade racer built around aggressive driving and consequences. They are different games, but the article may help clarify whether combat racing is what you actually want.
Family Man
Family Man is a dark narrative RPG about earning money, protecting a family, and making moral choices under pressure. It is a smaller, story-led alternative to the shooters and horror games filling the rest of the promotion.
A weekend is useful for this kind of game because the central question appears quickly: do its writing, decisions, and tone make you care about the consequences? If the answer is no, a large discount will not fix that.
The four timed trials are not full-weekend access
Xbox lists High On Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Little Nightmares III, and Rogue Waters as timed trials for all Xbox players. That means your play clock matters.
Before pressing Start, finish updates, adjust accessibility and display settings, and make sure you actually have time to play. A timed trial spent watching shaders compile or stepping away from the console is not much of a trial.
High On Life 2
High On Life 2 is a comedy shooter with talking alien weapons, bounty hunting, and movement that includes skating. The trial should tell you more than a trailer can: whether the humor lands for you and whether the shooting and traversal are entertaining between jokes.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is the survival-heavy option: an open world shaped by anomalies, mutants, hostile people, and scavenging. Xbox highlights Update 2.0 as a major performance and feature revision. Use the trial to check how the current build performs on your hardware and whether its deliberate survival loop suits you.
Little Nightmares III
Little Nightmares III offers puzzle-platforming, unsettling environments, and creatures you generally want to avoid rather than challenge head-on. A timed trial is enough to test the atmosphere, controls, camera, and puzzle language without spoiling the entire trip.
Rogue Waters
Rogue Waters has the clearest limit in Xbox’s announcement: two hours. It combines turn-based tactical battles, ship combat, crew development, procedural runs, and permanent upgrades between attempts.
Two hours can disappear quickly in menus and tutorials. Start when you can play uninterrupted, learn the basic naval and boarding systems, and judge whether planning another run sounds exciting or exhausting.
How to install Xbox Free Play Days games
- Sign in with the Xbox account you intend to use.
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox console.
- Select the Subscriptions tab.
- Find the Free Play Days collection.
- Open the individual game page and confirm that it shows the appropriate free access or trial option before installing.
You can also start from the individual game links in the Xbox Wire post. Xbox says you must be signed in to see the correct install option for membership-based games.
Will your achievements and progress carry over?
Xbox says players who purchase a participating game can continue playing while keeping the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event. A game’s own account, cross-progression, or save rules can add more conditions, so check its support documentation if you plan to change platform or edition.
Do not buy automatically because you made progress. First decide whether you want more of the game after the free period ends, then compare the edition contents and the actual price shown in your region.
What should you download first?
- Start with ARC Raiders if you do not have Game Pass and want the broadest weekend access.
- Try Screamer if aggressive arcade racing is the draw.
- Try Family Man if you want a compact story and moral choices.
- Use S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s trial to judge current performance and survival pacing.
- Use Little Nightmares III’s trial to test its atmosphere and puzzle controls.
- Reserve a focused two hours for Rogue Waters rather than launching it casually.
- Try High On Life 2 if you need to know whether its comedy and gunplay work together for you.
The best Free Play Days choice is not necessarily the largest game. Pick the one answering a question you would otherwise have to pay to settle: Does it run well? Do your friends enjoy it? Does the humor land? Does one run make you want another?
If your weekend download is on PC and Steam later reports damaged files, our Steam file verification guide covers that separate repair process.
