If your PS5 controller is not connecting or charging, start by turning on the console with its power button, connecting the DualSense with the USB cable that came with it, and pressing the PS button. If that does not pair the controller, turn the PS5 off, reset the DualSense with the small button on its back, reconnect it by USB, and press PS again. A controller that pairs by cable but will not charge in Rest Mode usually needs the PS5’s USB-power setting changed.
The symptoms can look similar, but “not connecting” and “not charging” are different problems. Work through the section that matches what the controller is doing before buying a new cable, battery, or controller.
Quick fixes for a PS5 controller that will not connect or charge
- Turn on the PS5 with the physical power button.
- Connect the DualSense directly to the console with the USB cable included with the controller.
- Press the PS button and wait for the player indicator to light.
- If nothing happens, try another USB port on the console.
- Leave the controller connected long enough to recover from a completely drained battery, then press PS again.
- If it still will not pair, reset the controller using the rear reset button and repeat the wired pairing process.
- Once connected, update the controller under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
Do not begin by rebuilding the PS5 database or resetting the entire console. Those are broader console troubleshooting tools, not the normal first steps for a single controller that will not pair or charge.
How to pair a DualSense controller with PS5
Use this process after buying a controller, using it with another console, or connecting it to a PC, phone, tablet, or television:
- Turn on the PS5 using the console’s power button.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with the USB cable that came with the controller.
- Press the PS button.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to turn on.
- After the controller has enough battery charge, disconnect the cable to test the wireless connection.
Sony notes that a DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If you last used the controller on a different PS5, pairing it by USB with the console in front of you is the important step; repeatedly pressing PS without reconnecting it may simply try to reach the previous console.
How to reset a PS5 controller that will not connect
A controller reset is appropriate when the wired pairing process does not work, the DualSense repeatedly disconnects, or it appears to be stuck trying to connect elsewhere.
- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the controller.
- Turn the DualSense over and find the small reset-button hole on the back.
- Use a pin or similar narrow tool to press the button inside.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with the USB cable that came with it.
- Turn on the console and press the PS button.
Sony says this reset does not reconfigure the controller or affect its pairing settings. Think of it as a hardware restart, followed by a fresh wired connection—not a factory reset of your PS5, account, games, or saves.
What the controller lights tell you
- The player indicator lights after you press PS: pairing succeeded.
- The light bar blinks during pairing but never settles: repeat the wired pairing process, then reset the controller if necessary.
- The controller works only while connected: test the battery and charging steps below, then check whether the console is set to communicate over USB.
- No light appears at all: leave it connected to a powered console, test another console USB port, and try the reset procedure.
Lights can narrow the problem, but they cannot prove that the battery, USB cable, or port is healthy. The most useful test is whether one known-good controller and cable combination works in the same PS5 port.
How to fix a PS5 controller that will not charge
1. Charge while the PS5 is fully on
First remove Rest Mode from the equation. Turn the PS5 on, connect the controller directly to a console USB port, and give a deeply discharged controller time before pressing PS. If it charges while the console is on but stops in Rest Mode, the controller itself may be fine.
2. Enable USB power in Rest Mode
On PS5, open:
Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports
Select an option that supplies USB power for the period you need. Sony says supported CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups can also offer an Adaptive setting. If USB power is disabled, plugging a controller into a sleeping console will not charge it as expected.
3. Test another USB port
Move the same cable and controller to another USB port on the PS5. If one port works and another does not, the problem is no longer pointing primarily at the controller. Disconnect hubs and extension cables during this test so the DualSense is connected directly to the console.
4. Test the cable carefully
Use the cable supplied with the controller for pairing whenever possible. A different cable can help identify a damaged lead, but a cable that powers another accessory is not automatically proven to support the connection needed for controller pairing. Test one variable at a time: same controller and port with a different cable, then the same cable and port with another controller if one is available.
5. Inspect the USB-C connection
Look for a loose plug, visible damage, or debris around the controller’s USB-C port. Do not force a connector or insert metal tools into the port. If the cable only works at a particular angle, stop stressing the connector and move to PlayStation’s repair options.
Update the DualSense device software
Controller software updates arrive alongside PS5 system software updates. After you regain control of the console, update the DualSense manually:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the controller cannot be updated through a PS5 but still connects to a Windows PC, Sony also provides the official PlayStation Accessories application for controller updates. Use Sony’s download rather than an unofficial firmware utility.
Controller works by USB but disconnects wirelessly
If the DualSense is reliable over a wired connection but drops out as soon as the cable is removed, keep it wired while you update its software. You can also tell the PS5 to communicate through the cable:
- Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
- Open Communication Method.
- Select Use USB Cable.
Sony explains that choosing Use Bluetooth makes the controller communicate wirelessly even when a USB cable is connected. Choosing USB is therefore a useful diagnostic step: if the problem disappears, you have separated a wireless-connection issue from a button, stick, or general console problem.
After testing, disconnect other nearby Bluetooth accessories and move close to the console before trying wireless play again. If more than one DualSense is available, compare them in the same location. A second controller that stays connected under identical conditions is useful evidence that the first controller needs service.
Controller worked on PC or phone but will not reconnect to PS5
Do not try to pair it to the PS5 from a phone’s Bluetooth menu. Turn on the console, connect the controller to the PS5 by USB, and press PS. That wired process restores the console connection.
The Create + PS button combination is for placing a DualSense into Bluetooth pairing mode with supported devices. It is not the normal recovery method for a controller that needs to reconnect to its PS5.
When to use PS5 Safe Mode
Safe Mode can help only after the controller successfully communicates through USB. If the DualSense will not work in the normal PS5 interface but does work over USB in Safe Mode, a console software problem becomes more plausible.
Start with the least invasive options. Our guide to clearing the PS5 cache and rebuilding the database safely explains what those maintenance tools do and, just as importantly, which options can erase data. Do not select Reset PS5 to solve an ordinary controller-pairing failure.
How to isolate the faulty part
| Test result | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Controller charges while PS5 is on, but not in Rest Mode | Enable Supply Power to USB Ports in Rest Mode settings. |
| Controller works with one cable but not another | Replace the failed cable with a suitable known-good cable. |
| Controller works in one PS5 USB port but not another | Avoid the suspect port and arrange console support if the failure persists. |
| Controller works wired but not wirelessly | Update it, test Use USB Cable, then investigate wireless interference or controller service. |
| Another DualSense works with the same cable and port | Reset and update the failing controller; seek repair if it still fails. |
| No controller works with the same port and cable | Change the cable and port before blaming an individual controller. |
This comparison prevents the most common troubleshooting mistake: changing several parts at once and then not knowing which change fixed—or failed to fix—the problem.
When the DualSense probably needs repair
Use PlayStation Repairs if the controller still will not pair after a reset and wired reconnection, will not charge through multiple known-working console ports and cables, has a loose or damaged USB-C port, or disconnects while another controller remains stable in the same setup.
Do not open the controller just to diagnose a charging problem, especially if it may still be under warranty. Record the controller’s serial number from the back, note which cables and ports you tested, and describe whether it works over USB, Bluetooth, both, or neither. Those details make a support request much more useful.
The short answer
For a PS5 controller that is not connecting, pair it by connecting it to the powered-on console with the included USB cable and pressing PS. If that fails, turn off the PS5, press the DualSense reset button on the back, reconnect it by USB, and press PS again.
For a controller that is not charging, test it while the console is fully on, try another PS5 USB port and cable, and enable Supply Power to USB Ports for Rest Mode charging. Once connected, update the controller software. If another DualSense works with the same cable and port but yours does not, the controller is the likely service candidate.
