How to Appear Offline on PS5 and Hide What You’re Playing

To appear offline on PS5, press the PS button, select your profile in the Control Center, choose Online Status, and select Appear Offline. You can also change it from your profile on the home screen, from the user-selection screen before signing in, or through the PlayStation App.

That setting hides your PlayStation Network presence, but it is not a complete invisibility switch. Sony warns that individual games may still show you as online to other players, and people can still send game and voice-chat invitations. If you also want to hide a specific game, your gaming history, or notifications, use the separate privacy controls explained below.

How to appear offline on PS5

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller to open the Control Center.
  2. Select your profile picture.
  3. Select Online Status.
  4. Choose Appear Offline.

Sony confirms these steps in its official PlayStation online-status guide. The change applies to your PlayStation account rather than only the current game.

You can switch back by following the same path and choosing Online. PS5 also offers a Busy status, which tells other players you may not want to be disturbed but does not present you as offline.

Every way to change your PS5 online status

Method Steps Best use
PS5 Control Center PS button > Profile > Online Status > Appear Offline Fastest method while using the console
PS5 home screen Select Profile > Online Status > Appear Offline When you are already at the home screen
User-selection screen Highlight your user, press Options, then change Online Status Appear offline before fully signing in
PlayStation App Open the Play screen, tap Profile > Online Status > Appear Offline Change status from your phone

The PlayStation App route is useful when the console is not in front of you. Sony also says the selected status remains in place the next time you log in, so you do not need to repeat the setting every session unless you want to change it.

How to appear offline before signing in

If you do not want your account to briefly appear online when starting the PS5, change the status from the user-selection screen:

  1. Turn on or wake the PS5 and stop at the screen where you choose a user.
  2. Highlight your user profile.
  3. Press the Options button on the controller.
  4. Select the online-status option and choose Appear Offline.
  5. Sign in normally.

This changes the same account-level status; it is not a separate private mode. If your status was already set to Appear Offline when you last logged out, Sony says that choice should carry into the next login.

What Appear Offline actually hides

Appear Offline changes the presence your friends and other PlayStation users see through PlayStation Network. Instead of displaying you as online, your account appears unavailable.

It does not disconnect the console from the internet. You can still use PlayStation Network features, launch online games, download content, and join multiplayer where your account and subscription are eligible. It also does not sign you out of your profile.

The setting follows the account across supported consoles. If you are signed in on multiple PS5 systems—or on a PS5 and PS4—Sony says changing your status on one changes it for the others.

What Appear Offline does not hide

This is where many privacy guides oversimplify the feature. Sony lists several important limitations:

  • A game may still show you online internally. A publisher’s own friends list, clan system, cross-platform account, match roster, server, or social menu can expose activity independently of your PSN presence.
  • Players can still invite you. Appear Offline and Busy do not block voice-chat or online-game invitations.
  • It does not automatically hide gaming history. Your games, trophies, and recent activity have separate privacy controls.
  • Older PlayStation devices behave differently. Sony says signing in on PS3, PS Vita, or PlayStation TV causes you to appear online.
  • It does not mute notifications. Use Do Not Disturb or customize notification categories if pop-ups are the actual problem.

If a cross-platform game still shows you as active, check that game’s own privacy, presence, party, and linked-account settings. The PS5 option controls PlayStation presence; it cannot guarantee invisibility inside every third-party network.

How to hide what game you are playing on PS5

For broader activity control, open:

Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customize Your Privacy Settings

Review the option for Who can see your online status and what you’re currently playing. Sony’s current privacy-settings guide says PS5 lets you control online status, current play, gaming history, and hidden games separately.

If you want to hide only selected titles:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Users and Accounts.
  3. Select Privacy.
  4. Choose View and Customize Your Privacy Settings.
  5. Select Hide your games from other players.
  6. Choose the games whose activity you want to conceal.

According to Sony’s hidden-games instructions, activity for a title added to this list is not displayed to other players.

Hiding a library game is not the same as hiding it from players

PS5 uses two similarly named features that solve different problems:

Setting What it does What it does not do
Hide in Game Library Removes the tile from your normal library view Does not change your profile or activity privacy
Hide your games from other players Stops activity for selected games from being displayed to other players Does not uninstall the game or remove it from your account
Appear Offline Makes your PSN presence appear offline Does not guarantee a game’s internal network will hide you

To hide a game only from your own library view, open Game Library > Your Collection, highlight the game, press Options, and select Hide. To see it again, open Filter and Sort and enable Hidden Items. Sony explicitly notes that this library setting does not affect your profile.

Does appearing offline hide you on Discord?

Sony says that when you choose Appear Offline on PlayStation, your PlayStation online status is not displayed on Discord. PlayStation’s hidden-games setting also applies to the gaming activity shared with Discord.

That applies to the PlayStation presence shared through the linked account. Discord has its own presence and privacy settings, so it is possible for your Discord account itself to appear online for another reason. If you want to separate the services completely, unlink them under Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services > Discord.

For setup and voice-chat instructions, see our complete Discord on PS5 guide.

How to stop invitations and messages

Appear Offline does not stop invitations. If you want fewer interruptions or tighter access, change the communication settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
  2. Select View and Customize Your Privacy Settings.
  3. Review who can ask to be your friend.
  4. Review who can interact with you through parties, games, and messages.
  5. Review whether you receive crossplay game invitations.

PS5 also offers four privacy presets. Social and Open exposes the most information and access; Team Player and Friend Focused progressively limit it; Solo and Focused is the most restrictive. Sony describes Solo and Focused as preventing other players—even friends—from seeing profile information or inviting you to chat.

A preset changes multiple settings together. If you want friends to see your profile but not random players, or want messages without game invitations, choose View and Customize instead of relying only on a preset.

How to mute pop-ups with Do Not Disturb

If you mainly want uninterrupted play, you may not need to hide your presence at all. Turn on Do Not Disturb:

  1. Press the PS button.
  2. Select Notifications in the Control Center.
  3. Turn on Do Not Disturb.

Sony’s notification guide says this temporarily stops notification pop-ups until you log out, restart the console, or disable Do Not Disturb. It does not change what friends see.

For longer-term control, go to Settings > Notifications. You can manage pop-ups for game invitations, parties, messages, friend requests, trophies, downloads, wishlist updates, subscriptions, and other categories. You can also control previews, sounds, vibration, and display time.

Why do friends still see me online?

Work through these checks:

  1. Confirm your PSN status. Open your profile from the Control Center and verify that Appear Offline is selected.
  2. Check the game itself. Look for a separate online-status or privacy option in the game’s social menu.
  3. Check linked accounts. Epic, Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Discord, and other services may maintain their own friend and presence systems.
  4. Review PS5 privacy settings. Restrict who can see your online status, current game, gaming history, or selected titles.
  5. Check another signed-in console. Your PSN status follows the account, but older PlayStation devices can cause you to appear online.
  6. Sign out and back in if the display looks stale. Then confirm the setting before launching a game.

Do not assume the feature is broken simply because someone inside the same multiplayer game can see you. Sony explicitly warns that you might appear online to other players within a game.

Can child accounts appear offline?

Child family members may have privacy controls managed by the family manager, parent, or guardian. Sony says the adult manager can choose a privacy profile and decide which settings the child may change.

If the online-status option is unavailable or resets on a child account, the family manager should check the child’s privacy controls rather than attempting to change settings from the child profile alone.

Best setup for playing privately on PS5

For the most private practical setup, combine several controls:

  • Set Online Status to Appear Offline.
  • Limit who can see your online status and current game.
  • Hide selected games from other players when needed.
  • Restrict party, message, friend, and game invitations.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb when you want no pop-ups.
  • Review privacy settings inside cross-platform games and linked services.

No single toggle covers every network. Appear Offline handles PlayStation Network presence; privacy settings control profile visibility and communication; individual games control their own social systems; and Do Not Disturb controls what interrupts the screen.

The short answer

Press the PS button, open your profile, select Online Status, and choose Appear Offline. Use the login-screen method if you want that status set before entering your account, or change it from the PlayStation App when away from the console.

For genuine privacy, do not stop there. Hide selected games, restrict who can see current play and gaming history, review invitation permissions, and check any third-party account used by the game. That combination addresses the information Appear Offline alone does not cover.
