To refund an Xbox digital game, sign in to Microsoft’s official Request a refund for digital games page with the account that made the purchase. Select the eligible order, choose Request a refund, explain the reason, review the request, and submit it.
A request is not the same as an approval. Microsoft evaluates digital purchases under its current terms, local law, the item involved, and account activity. Do not rely on the often-repeated claim that every Xbox game can automatically be returned within two hours of play.
How to request an Xbox game refund
- Open Microsoft’s official Xbox digital-game refund page in a web browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the game or app.
- Find the purchase in the list of eligible orders.
- Select the item and choose Request a refund.
- Choose or enter the reason for the request.
- Select Next, check that the item and explanation are correct, then submit.
Microsoft’s Store refund instructions use this same process for Xbox and Microsoft Store games on PC. The refund page is account-specific, so signing in with a family member’s account, an old email address, or a different gamertag can make the purchase appear to be missing.
Xbox refund eligibility: what actually matters
Microsoft says a game or app purchase may be eligible for a refund. Digital goods are not automatically returnable in every circumstance, unless the offer or applicable law gives you that right.
Expect the decision to consider factors such as:
- How recently the purchase was made
- How much the game or content has been used
- Whether the product has been consumed, redeemed, or transferred
- Whether the request concerns a game, add-on, virtual currency, subscription, bundle, or gift
- Your market and any rights provided by local consumer law
- The reason supplied with the request
The best approach is to stop playing once you know you want a refund and submit the request promptly. Be specific and truthful: “purchased the Xbox version instead of the Windows version” or “the game repeatedly fails to launch after troubleshooting” is more useful than a vague sentence.
Is there a two-hour Xbox refund rule?
Do not treat two hours as a guaranteed Xbox policy. Steam’s familiar playtime rule is often repeated in Xbox discussions, but Microsoft’s public support instructions do not promise that every purchase under a fixed two-hour threshold will be approved.
A short amount of playtime can help show that you did not substantially use the product, but approval still depends on eligibility. Likewise, being inside a commonly cited time window does not override restrictions on consumables, bundle components, third-party purchases, or local terms.
Why is the game missing from the refund page?
If you cannot see the purchase, check these possibilities before submitting a support request:
- Wrong Microsoft account: Sign out and use the account shown on the purchase receipt.
- The order is still processing: A new transaction may not be ready for the self-service refund flow immediately.
- The purchase came from another retailer: Microsoft says it does not accept returns for products bought from a different seller. Contact that retailer.
- It was a gift: The purchaser and recipient have different roles, and a redeemed code may be treated differently from an unredeemed order.
- It is not an eligible item: Consumed virtual currency, parts of a bundle, and some other digital products may not receive a self-service option.
- The order is older: The refund page may not present purchases that fall outside its online eligibility flow.
Open your Microsoft account order history and locate the transaction, order number, date, payment method, and purchasing account. If the charge is present but no refund control appears, use the official support link on the refund page rather than filing the same request repeatedly.
Can you refund one game from a bundle?
Microsoft’s current support instructions say that single items inside a bundle cannot be returned separately. If you bought a bundle, the refund flow may apply to the complete product rather than the one component you did not want.
This distinction also matters for deluxe editions. The base game, an upgrade pack, downloadable content, and virtual currency can be separate products or one bundle depending on the store listing. Check the exact order name before submitting.
Can you refund DLC or in-game currency?
Eligibility is more limited when content has been consumed or added to an account. Season passes, add-ons, virtual currency, and other durable or consumable digital items are not interchangeable with an unused base game.
You can check the official refund page, but do not spend currency, open packs, redeem bonuses, or use the add-on after deciding to request a refund. Usage can affect the request, and deleting an item from the console does not reverse its redemption.
How long does an Xbox refund take?
Microsoft says a digital-game refund request may take up to 72 hours to process. It sends updates and also provides a Refund status area.
After Microsoft issues a refund, the money does not necessarily appear immediately. Its support documentation says refunds are generally applied to the original payment option within three to five business days, although the bank or payment provider can take additional time.
You can check a game or app refund through the Xbox order-history page. Microsoft’s refund-status guide says the product entry will show its status. If it says the refund was issued, wait a few days before assuming the payment is lost.
What happens to the game after approval?
A refund removes the purchase entitlement. An installed game may still occupy storage, but you should not expect it to remain playable without another valid license, such as a separate purchase or current subscription entitlement.
Your save data is normally separate from the purchase license. Do not delete saves merely because the refund was approved; you may want them if you buy the game later or access it through Game Pass. Cloud synchronization and the game’s own account system can affect where progress is stored.
If the title is also included with Game Pass, a valid subscription can keep providing access while it remains in the catalog and your plan includes it. That does not turn the refunded purchase into a permanent subscription copy. Our Xbox Game Pass Ultimate vs Premium vs Essential guide explains the plans and their regular access rules.
How to check Xbox refund status
- Return to the Xbox refund page and sign in with the purchasing account.
- Open the Refund status section.
- Find the product and read the current decision or processing state.
- Check the email address attached to the Microsoft account for updates.
- If a refund is marked issued, monitor the original payment method for several business days.
Keep the order number and confirmation email. They make it easier to explain the issue if the refund was approved but the credit has not arrived after the payment provider’s normal processing period.
Game refund, preorder cancellation, and subscription cancellation are different
| Purchase type | Correct starting point | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Released digital game or app | Xbox digital-game refund page | Submit an eligibility request |
| Game preorder | Microsoft order history or preorder support | Charging time and cancellation options can differ before release |
| Game Pass or another subscription | Microsoft Services & subscriptions | Stopping recurring billing is not automatically a refund |
| Physical game or hardware | The retailer that sold it | Physical-return rules apply |
| Unknown charge | Microsoft payment investigation and account security | Investigate before treating it as ordinary buyer’s remorse |
Microsoft specifically notes that cancelling recurring billing outside a subscription-refund eligibility period does not create a refund entry. Turning off renewal simply prevents a future charge while access usually continues through the paid term.
What if your Xbox refund is denied?
Read the decision message first. A denial can reflect the item type, usage, timing, purchase source, or another eligibility condition. Do not invent a different reason and resubmit identical requests.
If the decision appears to rely on an error—such as a title that never launched, the wrong platform version, or a duplicate charge—gather the order number, purchase date, gamertag, error message, and troubleshooting already attempted. Then use official Xbox Support for the account and billing issue.
For an unrecognized charge, secure the account: change compromised credentials, review sign-in activity and payment methods, enable stronger sign-in protection, and use Microsoft’s charge-investigation route. A chargeback through a bank can have account consequences, so the platform’s official billing process is the sensible first stop unless your payment provider advises otherwise.
Before you submit: a quick checklist
- Use the exact Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Stop using the game or add-on once you decide to seek a refund.
- Find the order in Microsoft account order history.
- Confirm whether it came from Microsoft or another retailer.
- Check whether it is a bundle, gift, subscription, preorder, or consumed item.
- Write a short, accurate reason for the request.
- Save the confirmation and check the Refund status tab.
The short answer: request the refund through Xbox’s official digital-game refund page, submit it promptly with the purchasing account, and track the result online. Eligibility is assessed rather than guaranteed, processing can take up to 72 hours, and an issued credit may take several more business days to reach the original payment method.
Instructions and processing guidance were checked against official Xbox and Microsoft Support pages on October 16, 2026. Refund eligibility varies by purchase, market, usage, offer terms, and applicable law.
